Driftwood

With the 4th of July only a few days away it got me reminiscing about my childhood.  We used to own a cottage right on the ocean in Humarock, MA.  Our cottage had the ocean in the front and a marsh in the back with neighbors on either side of the house, it was a private beach, accessible only to those who owned property on the beach.  Every year on the 4th of July there was a bonfire competition, each homeowners goal was to have the biggest bonfire!  I vaguely remember hearing stories of my fathers bonfire reaching ghastly heights even putting wooden Adirondack chairs in there for height.  I remember going there as a kid and seeing the bonfires.    I was really young when my parents sold that cottage but I spent some summers after that at family’s summer homes in Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod and Scituate.

I used to love walking the beach as a kid and finding pieces of sea glass, driftwood and mermaids purses (which I now know are Skate egg cases), I remember the first mermaids purse I found, it was on Lovells Island in the Boston harbor, I was all excited because not only did I find a mermaids purse but I found a plastic mermaid doll too!  My day was perfect until some of my boy cousins convinced us girls to go explore a cave they discovered, I was up for the exploration until I saw rats in the cave, I do believe those in Boston 7 miles away heard my screams!  I spent the rest of the day waiting on the dock for the boat to come back!!!  My mom asked why I wasn’t playing with the rest of the kids… I told her why….. She stood waiting for the boat to come back on the dock for the rest of the day too (yup I get my fear of rodents from my mom!)

My uncle used to pay all us kids ten cents for each piece of sea glass we found and 25 cents for the blue sea glass! My sister loved sea glass but I really loved the driftwood,  I think it’s amazing the way some pieces of driftwood end up after having been bathed in the ocean.  I purchased these two pieces of driftwood last year with plans of using them in my guest room / home gym.  While that room is on the back burner right now (I got as far as re-painting the room but that’s about it)  I wanted to share how cute these two pieces are with you.

This piece reminds me of a horses head on the left side and sort of a witches face on the right side, can you see it?

This one, if you use your imagination a little, I can see a seal on the bottom with a little creature sitting on top of him but the fun thing is I can see two creatures in one on the top. One creature looks like he has a long elephants trunk with it’s mouth open an eye and ear to the left, now using the same eye the ear becomes a beak and the truck and mouth become a crazy hair style!  Do you see it?
