DIY Wall Sail

This summer I have been decorating my home in a Coastal Decor. Last month I made a DIY Beach Frame I wanted to make something for my living room wall that would go along with this summer casual look. I got the idea to make this DIY Wall Sail from a wooden flag pole I had on hand. When I replaced the wooden pole this weekend with a metal one the finish on the wooden one was weathered and distressed, I had an extra flat white twin sheet and thought I could use these to make a Wall Sail!

Supplies I used:

Old wooden flag pole
White flat sheet
Scrap pieces of strapping
Twine
4 Safety pins

To start I cut my flag pole down to 40 inches and the strapping I cut one to 18 inches and one to 15 inches.
I folded the sheet in half so the outer edge of the sail would be the folded edge. I laid the flag pole on the sheet and cut the bottom and the side (the side parallel to the pole). The larger (left side) of the sail is 37″ x 23″ the smaller sail (right side) is 34″ x 19″ (35″ x 22″ and 32″ x 18″ when finished). After cutting the two sails out I folded the edges over and ironed the fabric to keep the fold. Then I sewed the folded edges. I folded the bottom edge up about an inch and a half and stitched then slipped the pieces of strapping in the bottom edge.

To assemble, I used a safety pin at the top points and the bottom edge next to the pole and used twin through the pins around the pole. The strapping pieces of wood that is inserted at the bottom of the fabric is to keep the fabric taught across. If I had grommets on hand I would have used those with some white rope instead of the pins and twine but I wanted to use what I had in the house to keep the cost “free” for me. Below are some images of the above steps. This project took about 2 hours from start to finish!
