DIY Wall Clock

Since I started my kitchen renovation the wall clock I had up for years no longer worked, so I started thinking of a clock to make.  I used the clock mechanism from my old clock for this project and I had all the other material in the house already.

Supplies:

1 wire coat hanger
Pair of wire cutters
Pliers
Hot glue
Nails
Hammer
Twine
Piece of wood (cut to desired size)
Paint (white and black or brown)
Clock kit (or take it from an old clock)

I used a piece of extra mdf I had in my basement the width was fine at 16″ but the length was too long so I cut 4″ off to give me 20″ length.  I measured a rectangle in the center and screwed four screws in the corners of this rectangle and cut the lengths of wire I would need from a wire coat hanger.  I painted my board after drawing the rectangle on.  Don’t use pen when you draw your rectangle otherwise you will have to sand the pen mark off and repaint – 🙂 yup I was too impatient to go find a pencil that will teach me huh?

Attach the wire around the screws using your pliers (if you paint the wire first it will get scratched up when you use the pliers so you may have to do some touch ups with some paint)

I left my wire with some white showing through, you could paint yours completely if you want. I also added some old washers I had below the clock hands just to give it a little more industrial look.

After you get your metal coat hanger rectangle attached you can start using the twine and nails to make your numbers.  I looped the twine around the coat hanger rectangle then drew it out to the edge of the board leaving extra twin to hot glue on the back.  When I found where I wanted the twine to be on the board I put a nail in then tied the twine around the nail, once this was done for all the numbers I flipped it over and hot glued the twine onto the back.  You could cut yours of at the nail if you want but I wanted mine to have the twine on the edges for more character.

I used two nails on the back and a piece of wire so I could hang this up (you can use twine instead of the wire if you don’t have any wire handy).

I also put a nail in the middle of the coat hanger rectangle and attached the clock mechanism there.  You could drill a hole in the middle so just the clock hands were showing but again I wanted this to look a little more industrial so I put the whole mechanism on the front.  I also didn’t love the hands on the clock that I had so I took some black craft paper and cut these arrows out and hot glued them to the hands.

This project took a few hours total with trial and error (having to redo a few numbers as I wasn’t happy with the placement of them).  If you decide to try this let me know I’d love to see your clocks as well!
